The Kompetenzzentrum Wasser Berlin (KWB) is taking steps in shaping the future of end-of-waste (EoW) criteria for circular products derived from water. Through an extensive review of relevant literature, legal frameworks, and project reports, KWB has analyzed key insights from organizations such as the Joint Research Centre (JRC), the European Sustainable Phosphorus Platform (ESPP), and EUREAU. This effort also builds on previous research and development initiatives, including the Interreg WOW project.
To complement its research, KWB conducted stakeholder interviews to gain insights into the current state of EoW regulations and identify key challenges. Among the stakeholders engaged in these discussions were representatives from JRC, trading companies such as Aquaminerals and Soepenberg, technology providers like Cirtec, and experts from PROMAN and the Università Politecnica delle Marche (UNIVPM).
As part of this initiative, these stakeholders will convene for an expert meeting on the 14th of March to exchange knowledge on ongoing efforts and emerging developments, including initiatives driven by Dutch interest groups. The sister project CIRSEAU will also participate in this meeting to align EoW activities and strengthen collaboration between the two research initiatives. Beyond expert discussions, KWB is also fostering public engagement on EoW issues. A dedicated open workshop, co-organized with Aquaminerals, will take place at the IWA Resource Recovery Conference in Leeuwarden in May 2025, providing a platform for broader dialogue on regulatory and technical challenges in this field.
The key conclusions from these stakeholder engagements will inform the next phase of collaboration with industry and regulatory stakeholders, guiding further advancements in circular economy solutions for water.
