The IWA Resource Recovery 2025 conference is taking place from May 19 to 23, organized by Wetsus in collaboration with Delft University of Technology and Wageningen University & Research. Resource recovery is an inspiring yet challenging field, with many lessons learned in upscaling novel technologies and developing new markets. This conference aims to serve as a bridge between academia and industry, fostering collaboration to drive scalable and impactful solutions.

As part of the conference, BIOAZUL and Aquaminerals, with the support of the BOOST-IN project, are organizing a workshop titled “Unlocking Circular Innovation in the Water Sector: Navigating End-of-Waste Criteria and Innovative Business Models.” Scheduled for May 19, this workshop will address the challenges of bringing circular economy innovations in the water sector to market.

Traditional markets favour virgin materials, which are abundant, affordable, and widely accepted. In contrast, residuals from wastewater face significant barriers such as contamination concerns, legal restrictions, and limited market acceptance. These challenges make circular alternatives less attractive, as residuals retain their waste status unless they meet the EU’s End-of-Waste criteria—a complex and often unclear process that varies across countries.

The workshop will focus on two key topics:

  • End-of-Waste criteria
  • Innovative business models for circular products

A key objective of the workshop is to establish a Community of Practice dedicated to End-of-Waste criteria and circular business models. This community will foster ongoing dialogue and knowledge exchange, continuing discussions through BOOST-IN webinars and workshops.
