The BOOST-IN project successfully convened a pivotal co-creation workshop on April 9th, bringing together key stakeholders from the water and mining sectors to forge a path toward a more sustainable future. Held in Pirdop, the geographic and strategic heart of Bulgaria’s mining industry, the event focused on presenting innovative water-related solutions tailored for the mining sector.
The workshop attracted a dynamic mix of participants, including local authorities, industry leaders, and academic representatives from across the Srednogorie region. The primary goal was to foster a collaborative environment where challenges could be openly discussed, and a shared vision for sustainability, innovation, and stronger public engagement could be co-developed.
The core of the event featured the presentation and in-depth discussion of four innovative solutions designed to improve sustainable water management in the mining context, with a special focus on metal recovery from mining wastewater.
While the technologies presented were a key draw, the workshop’s most significant takeaway was the collective recognition that technological solutions alone are insufficient. Participants concluded that achieving meaningful progress depends on parallel efforts to improve social perception, ensure transparency in operations, and establish robust, cross-sector governance.
While the innovative solutions for metal recovery are promising, the most significant breakthrough was the unanimous agreement that true progress requires a holistic approach. We must build public trust and create supportive governance structures right alongside technological advancement. This is the foundation for lasting change in the Srednogorie region.
The event concluded with a strong commitment from all parties to build on the day’s success. Participants voiced a clear interest in maintaining the momentum through future workshops and collaborative local initiatives, ensuring the co-creation process continues to drive tangible outcomes for the region.
